Talent tussle ends in dramatic finish

Mon 1 Mar 2010, 15:43

Storm’s youth team Surrey Storm Talent were involved in another nail biter on Friday against Hertfordshire Mavericks.

Anita Hollman’s squad were plagued with injury and illness which resulted in plenty of changes throughout the game and in particular in the defensive end which has proved to be a real strength this season. England Under 17 athlete Rachel Mulloy has been diagnosed with suspected shin splints, whilst defender Katy Holland started the game despite suffering a chest infection. Captain Antonia Simmonds injured her knee in the opening quarter, the same knee that had been operated on pre season and Hannah Button was ill during warm up.

This resulted in plenty of shuffles for Holland and her side throughout the match which started off at a blistering pace in the first quarter with end to end action. Mavericks led by just the one goal at the end of this period and the same pattern followed for the second quarter. Maverick and England U19 mid-courter Sophia Candappa caught the eye in particular taking some superb ariel balls down the court.

Storm were really caught out in the 3rd quarter and a host of errors and missed shots resulted in them having to pull out all the stops in the final period. That’s exactly what they did, Storm’s star shooter Kadeen Corbin who has missed all of pre season and every match so far after having knee surgery in the autumn made her comeback at Goal Shooter for the final fifteen. Corbin’s presence lifted the team immediately and Storm clawed back the deficit goal by goal and with minutes left there were just 2 goals in it. Unfortunately for Storm, time was against them and it was all a little too late. Corbin netted 7 from 8 in an impressive final quarter but it was Hertfordshire Mavericks who held on for the 29-26 win.

Coach Anita Hollman was sure with a little more time Storm would have turned the game on it’s head; “A few more minutes and we could have won it” she stated. “I wish in a way we had an opportunity to play them again this season without all the disruptions, injuries and illnesses as I think the outcome would be different. It really did test the girls concentration to the very end”.

She added; “There were still so many positives to take from the game, It was great to see Kadeen back in action, her presence lifted the team, she’s such a big match player and to comeback and play like that after her injury was fantastic. She is still not 100% fit yet so there is more to come”.

Storm Talent Assistant Coach Emma Blackmore added; “It was the best game we have played so far, a full team effort right to the end. There were just a few crucial errors at times which cost us. It was great to have Kadeen back and now we are focusing on our next match just a week away against Loughborough Lightning”.

Surrey Storm Talent take on Loughborough Lightning Talent this Saturday, 6.30pm at Guildford Spectrum. The match is free for spectators to watch so come along and cheer on our youth team!
